EQUALITY | FRISCO JOINS NATIONAL BOYCOTT FOR EQUALITY ON OCTOBER 8, 2004
Planned Drop Out Could Cost US Economy $1.4 Billion
(Frisco, TX) – Equality | Frisco announced today plans to support the national Boycott for Equality scheduled for Friday, October 8, 2004, by encouraging members, friends and allies to “drop out” of the US economy for one day.
The U.S. lesbian and gay population spends an average of $1.4 billion each day, totaling $500 billion a year, and Boycott For Equality is organizing a one-day nation-wide economic 'walkout' on October 8, 2004 to make that point clear.
In the traditions of Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, this nation-wide boycott will send a statement that GLBT Americans and their supporters are vital and important members of our communities with significant economic presence.
According to the Washington D.C.-based public relations firm Witeck-Combs Communications, the US Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) population contributed an estimated $500 billion to the U.S. marketplace in 2003, while The University of Georgia’s Selig Center at the Terry College of Business estimates that the African-American, Hispanic, Asian and Native-American markets contributes $688 billion, $653 billion, $344 billion, and $45 billion respectively.
There are three elements to the boycott: No Work, No Purchases and No Cell Phones. Supporters are being encouraged to:
Not go to work. Call in sick or use a personal day. You do not have to come out to anyone in doing so unless you choose to do so. This will impact overall economic productivity. If you own a business, consider closing for the day to honor the goal.
Not purchase or buy ANYTHING. This includes groceries, services, retail goods etc. No movies, restaurants, or entertainment -- nothing! If we make no purchases, we do not generate sales tax for government coffers or revenues for businesses.
Not use your cell phone for the entire day. We will be able to measure the impact of loss of minutes on the telecommunication networks to demonstrate our presence.
According to the national website, www.boycottforequality.org, the purpose of this event is to “show the American people that GLBT people are important members of their community. Because so many of us are in the closet, the way to show our impact is to drop out of the economy to show that we are vital contributors and citizens and deserve fair and equal treatment like all members of society.”
“Regular events that occur within the GLBT community on this day will be cancelled, and members of supporting organizations like FriscoPride, Collin Equality Foundation, and others will be asked to join the boycott on October 8th,” said James Nunn, an organizer with Equality | Frisco. “Our goal is to bring this national program to Frisco and Collin County, to remind businesses in the area, that equality is a universal right,” continued Nunn.
Equality | Frisco joins other major groups that have endorsed or encouraged Boycott for Equality Day, including the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Don't Amend: The Equality Campaign, DC Diversity, Equality Illinois and Wyoming Equality. Additionally, comic Margaret Cho's web site, www.loveisloveislove.com, has listed Boycott For Equality Day as one of the "12 Things You Can Do" to promote gay and lesbian equality.
